Conformal coating is a thin protective layer applied to an assembled PCB. It can protect exposed conductors and solder joints from moisture, dust, chemicals, and other environmental risks.
However, coating is not needed for every board. The decision should start with the final product environment. Outdoor lighting, industrial controls, automotive electronics, and humid locations may need more protection than a clean indoor product.

First, identify areas that must be protected. Next, identify parts that must remain clear, such as connectors, test points, switches, heat sinks, and labels.
A manual process can work for low volume or prototypes. For repeat production, automated dispensing improves repeatability and reduces over-application. An SMT glue dispensing machine can support controlled paths, dots, and coverage patterns.
The coating method must also match the board design. Selective coating may suit complex assemblies, while a broader coating method may suit simple high-volume boards.
A good conformal coating process starts before the coating station. First, remove residues, dust, and moisture from the PCB. Then, confirm that the assembly has passed its required electrical and visual checks.
Mask no-coat areas carefully. In addition, confirm that components are fully cured and secure. If the board enters coating with defects, later inspection and rework become harder.
Finally, define the correct material thickness and curing method. Follow the coating supplier recommendations for storage, mixing, application, and cure time.
After coating, check coverage, edge protection, bubbles, bridging, and contamination. UV inspection can help when the coating material supports it. Functional testing should remain part of the final quality plan.
Also, plan rework before production starts. The team should know how to remove the material safely when a repair is needed. This reduces delays and avoids damage to the PCB or nearby components.
